At Stone Ridge Academy, students are equipped with essential daily living and self-help skills that enable them to navigate everyday life with independence and confidence. The school believes that consistent engagement in these activities is key to fostering self-sufficiency, and these skills are developed in conjunction with language, math, literacy, and social-emotional development. For example, brushing teeth not only promotes good hygiene but also provides opportunities for cooperation, motor, and vocal imitation, requesting related items, identifying and labeling them, and engaging in conversations about them. With regular practice, students can master self-help skills and take charge of their own lives.
Why are Functional Academics and Daily Living Skills Necessary?
At Stone Ridge Academy, we always consider where our students will be after graduating high school or even elementary school. As they transition to secondary or post-secondary education, it's crucial for them to develop independence and confidence to function in the community. To help them achieve this, we teach critical skills in academics, daily living, and transitional support. This includes managing preferred and non-preferred tasks, handling money, following directions, being aware of safety, reading street signs, and knowing whom to approach in case they get lost. These skills are paramount in ensuring that our students can manage a level of independence in the community.
